    Charles de La Fosse was born in 1636 in Paris and became one of the leading French painters of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Trained in the studio of Charles Le Brun, La Fosse absorbed the principles of the French classical tradition before traveling to Italy, where he encountered the work of Veronese and the Venetian colourists. This exposure shaped the luminous palette and fluid handling that would distinguish his mature style.
