About Chuji (Chusi) Kurihara

  • Biography

Chuji (Chusi) Kurihara studied Western-style painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He was in Britain between 1912 and 1924, and again from 1926 to 1927.

He was one of several Japanese artists who studied with Brangwyn, a close friend of the industrialist Matsukata Kojiro. Painting initially in the style of Turner, Kurihara is said to have developed a more dynamic style as a result of Brangwyn's influence. Kurihara also studied with Clausen.

He exhibited one work at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1927.
