About Cildo Meireles

  • Biography

Born in Rio de Janeiro to a family concerned with impoverished people, Cildo Meireles became a constructivist sculptor, who spent much of his youth in the interior at the time Brasilia was being created.

In the year 2000, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York held a major retrospective of his work, which addressed periods of military oppression and persecution, Brazil's struggles with cultural identify, and that country's relationship with the United States.

He lived in New York City from 1971 to 1973 and there became closely associated with many conceptual artists. He also produced a book of fake bank notes and cards, caricatures but closely resembling real money.
