Claude Shurr
  • Biography from Aspire Auctions, Cleveland

Claude Schurr was the son of Julien Schürr-Linovski and Suzanne Weishaner. He began painting at the age of seven and says: "I always knew that I would paint because the idea of doing something else never came to me in mind". After the Pasteur High School in Neuilly-sur-Seine, he studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris from 1938 to 1942. From 1950 Schurr's studio was located rue Émile-Allez. He became a professor at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1952, then professor at the National School of Applied Arts and Crafts in 1956. He was a member of the jury of the National School of Fine Arts from 1962 to 1968, then created with Jean-Maxime Relange Academy of Port Royal in 1969. Claude Schürr's style is often described as a synthesis between Cubism and Impressionism, between abstraction and figuration. "In the wake of post-Cubism," says Lydia Harambourg, "Schürr composes the canvas from colored facets whose interweaving emphasizes the qualities of a draftsman who participate in the solid structure of his subjects: nudes, interiors, and especially landscapes inspired by his many travels in the countries of Europe. His palette plays on bright and contrasting tones, whose dominant hot or cold is related to the theme of the painting."
