Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Crandall Norton came to Southern California at the age of seven, was educated in the Pasadena City Schools, graduating from the Pasadena Junior College in 1939 with honors in art. After the war years, Crandall resumed the interest in transparent watercolor, which had been stimulated in junior college by Jewell Bennett Buller, a teacher at the college and disciple of the California School of watercolor painting. In later years, study with Milford Zornes and Hans Burkhardt provided new insights for the artist.
