During the days of the Cultural Revolution, in the late 1980's Zhang finally went to school and eventually got a Masters of Fine Art from the Guangzhou Fine Arts Academy. At this time he specialized in political art which made him famous in China, particularly for painting a series of works featuring girls of the Red Guards. During the time of Mao`s Cultural Revolution (1965-1968) women were encouraged not to be women, but to be part of the homogeneous mass, androgynous workers wore loose clothing and bowed their heads to hide their natural curves. At this time he specialized in political art which made him famous in China, particularly for painting a series of works featuring girls of the Red Guards. During the time of Mao`s Cultural Revolution (1965-1968) women were encouraged not to be women, but to be part of the homogeneous mass, androgynous workers wore loose clothing and bowed their heads to hide their natural curves.
