About Daniel Carter Beard

    Daniel Beard was a naturalist, artist, and illustrator who was born in 1850, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He trained at the Art Students League in New York City, and ultimately became the editor of Recreation magazine. His greatest focus was illustrating scenes of outdoor life.

    He taught animal drawing from 1893 to 1900, and founded the Sons of Daniel Boone, the first scouting society for boys, which later merged with the Boy Scouts of America. He later become the Boy Scouts national commissioner, and became known to boys all over the country as "Uncle Dan.
