Hone is noted for his pensive landscape images, executed using a light pallette. He is a full member and past-President of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), with whom he has exhibited since 1948. A self-portrait of David Hone (1965, oil on board) hangs in the National Self Portrait Collection of Ireland at the University of Limerick.
