    Denton Welch was a writer and artist born in Shanghai, China. He spent much of his childhood in both China and England and studied at Repton School alongside Roald Dahl. Welch trained as a painter at Goldsmiths and continued to work as an artist throughout his writing career.

    He published his first book, 'Maiden Voyage', in 1943 and the following year wrote the novel 'In Youth is Pleasure', which garnered him success and prestige as an author. A life-changing accident when he was aged twenty left him partially paralysed and with other health complications, which likely increased his focus on writing. Welch was championed by Edith Sitwell and John Lehmann
