  • Biography

Domenico Tintoretto was born in 1560, the son of Jacopo Tintoretto. Domenico trained in his father's studio, and entered the Venetian painters' guild at the age of seventeen.

He assisted his father on prestigious projects, but was soon entrusted with independent commissions. Those included the Doge's Palace, and the various Venetian schools and local churches (such as San Giorgio Maggiore).

Although he was a capable history painter, Domenico became particularly sought after for his portraits. He recorded the features of the most important individuals of his day, including Margaret of Austria, the Queen of Spain, Vincenzo I Gonzaga, and the 4th Duke of Mantua.
