About Don Stivers

  • Biography

    A painter of American West subjects, Don Stivers is especially focused on the Civil War and events that were critical in the nation's history such as General Lee at Gettysburg, the Union Army returning to Washington after the victory at Appomattox, and the last cavalry charge with horses by the 11th U.S. Cavalry.

    Stivers grew up in Superior, Wisconsin, and took art training at the California College of Arts and Crafts after serving in World War II as a Navy corpsman. He had a 15-year career as a commercial artist on the West Coast and then moved East, where he had magazine commissions from Reader's Digest and Field and Stream, and book cover work for the All Creatures Great and Small...
