Edouard Doigneau, initially destined for a military career, entered the École polytechnique in 1885 but later abandoned his studies in 1900 to pursue painting. He studied in Paris and traveled to various places for inspiration. Doigneau was a member of several art societies and won a gold medal for his work at the 1906 Salon des Artistes Français.
