    Edward Ashton Cannell (1927 - 1994)

    Born in Port Erin in 1927, Edward Ashton’s father, was a manager of the Isle of Man Bank in Port Erin and Ashton junior was brought up in Bank House, Port St Mary.

    The family moved to live on the promenade after his father's death. Ashton went to Rushen primary school, the Buchan and King William's College.

    He left school in 1944 and tried banking for a year, which he did not like.

    After he was rejected for national service he pursued his career in art and went to Douglas Art School, where his contemporaries included Bryan Kneale, Norman Sayle and Toni Onley. He went on to Liverpool College of Art where he studied for his national diploma in design...
