    Erik (Eero) Nikolai Järnefelt was born in Finland in 1863, and died in 1937. He was a painter and art academy professor. Järnefelt is best known for his naturalistic crowds motives, portraits, and landscape motifs.

    He studied in Helsinki from 1874 to 1878, then at the Russian Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg from 1883 to 1886. One of Järnefelt's inspirations was Jules Bastien-Lepage's naturalistic art.

    In 1889, he married actress Saimi Swan. In 1892, he made his first trip to the Koli area in northern Karelia where he undertook many travels in the area until 1936. Järnefelt was appointed professor in 1912 and was also a time head of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts.
