Järnefelt is best known for his naturalistic crowds motives, portraits, and landscape motifs. He studied in Helsinki from 1874 to 1878, then at the Russian Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg from 1883 to 1886. One of Järnefelt's inspirations was Jules Bastien-Lepage's naturalistic art.
