    Elfriede Mackel was born in 1907 in Reichenbach. Mackel was a student of the trade. She attended trade school in Reichenbach with Paul Kreher and later at the School of Painting by Guido Richter in Dresden. She then studied in Munich, where she was promoted by Walther Rothes, Uta von Weech and Moritz Heymann. She studied from 1928 at the Munich academy with Angelo Jank, Max Mayrshofer and Ludwig von Herterich. In 1931, Mackel took study trips to Italy. In 1934, she attended a one-year training with Robert Friedrich Karl Scholtz in Berlin, which was interrupted by three months of study at the French Academy in Rome. She was briefly a student of Eugen Spiro in Berlin, and from 1937 took repeated study trips to Italy and Germany.
