  • Biography

Elizabeth Southerden Thompson, Lady Butler, was born on November 3, 1846 and died on October 2, 1933. She was a British painter, one of the few female painters to achieve fame for history paintings, especially military battle scenes, at the end of that tradition.

She was married to Lieutenant General Sir William Butler and is also known as Lady Butler. Some of her most famous military scenes come from the Napoleonic Wars, but she covered most major 19th century wars and painted several works showing the First World War.

The sister of poet Alice Meynell, Lady Butler is best known in Ireland for her large history paintings such as 'Evicted', which is now in the UCD collection. In 1898 The AWhyte's Auction
