    Painter. Born in East Hardwick, VT on Jan. 7, 1867. Descended from Puritan stock, Torrey was from a long line of New England divines. After earning an M.A. degree from Bowdoin College in 1890, he studied art at the AIC and in Paris and Florence. He had a studio in Boston for a few years and, shortly after the turn of the century, spent a few years in Paris. Torrey worked in NYC from 1911 until his final move to southern California in 1923. After four years in Pasadena, he settled in San Diego where he remained. During 1933-34 he directed the WPA Art Project there. He died on March 10, 1949. An Impressionist, his forte was painting children; however, he also did seascapes and scenes of the Arroyo Seco. Member: San Diego FA Society; Laguna Be
