About Elmer Brown

  • Biography

    Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, i909, and schooled in Columbus, Ohio, Brown came to Cleveland at the age of twenty. He became associated with the art and theatre departments of Karamu House shortly after arriving in the city. Here he became a close friend of Langston Hughes and played important roles in the premiers productions of several of Hughes' plays at Karamu.

    His works were exhibited for several years at the Annual May Show of the Cleveland Museum of Art, with the Cleveland Society of Artists, as well as the International Print Show exhibitions in New York City and Philadelphia. He exhibited also at the galleries of the Associate American Artists in New York City.
