    Born in Chester, IL on Dec. 8, 1894. Segar created the comic strip "Thimble Theater" in 1919 from which emerged "Popeye, the Sailor Man" in wide syndication. He coined the words "goon" and "jeep." He settled in Santa Monica in 1925 and remained until his death of cirrhosis of the liver on Oct. 13, 1938.
