m. Rochester, N.Y., June 9, 1897, Colin Campbell Cooper, artist, of Philadelphia.

Has been abroad many times since 1886, painting interiors and street scenes in oil and water colors in France, Holland, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland.

Emma Lampert was born in Nunda, NY in 1855. Following graduation from Wells College, she studied in New York City at the Art Students League under Wm M. Chase and at the Cooper Union, with Harry Thompson in Paris, and J. Kever in Holland.

She traveled widely after her marriage to artist Colin Campbell Cooper in 1897. After coming to California to attend the Panama Pacific International Exposition, she and her husband spent the winter in Los Angeles.

Mrs. Cooper died in Pittsfield, NY on July 30, 1920. Her oils and watercolors include still lifes and scenes from her world travels.

Born in Nunda, New York, Emma Lampert Cooper was known as a brilliant colorist of landscape painting. She studied at Wells College, Cooper Union Art School and the Art Students League with Agnes Abbatt and William Merritt Chase.

She frequently painted in Europe and studied at the Academie Delecluse in Paris and with Jacob Kever in Holland. She also traveled throughout Canada and India.

Cooper became head of the art department of Foster School in Clifton Springs, New York, and also taught at the Mechanic's Institute in Rochester. In 1897, she married artist Colin Campbell Cooper. She was active in the watercolor societies and exhibited widely. Cooper was a founder of the Rochester Art Club, in Rochester, NY, which also records her birth year as 1855.

A painter of streetscapes, florals, and interiors, Emma Lampert Cooper was born near Rochester, New York. She studied at the Cooper Union Art School and the Art Students League in New York, and at the Delecluse Academy in Paris. Returning to Rochester, she taught at the Mechanics Institute from 1893 and was active in the art life of the city until her marriage to the painter Colin Campbell Cooper in 1897. After traveling in Europe for a period of time, the couple settled in New York City. There, working in an impressionist style, she turned to her husband's favorite theme, the architectural treasures of New York and other historic cities.

Like most plein-air painters, the Coopers traveled constantly in search of subjects. In the spring of 1913, they visited Charleston, South Carolina. Though nothing is known about their stay, their visit is recorded in Colin's paintings of some of the city's most historic and cherished structures, including St. Philip's Church, Charleston. During their trip, they also visited Beaufort, a small coastal town about seventy miles south of Charleston, noted for its picturesque buildings, alleyways, and streets. Emma's Old Beaufort, South Carolina is of a subject that she and Colin both painted, probably side-by-side and on the same day. The fluent brushwork and radiant color are typical of her vivacious style.
