In 1892 he received a first gold medal for his watercolor painting in Dresden. In 1897 Ernst Eitner founded the 'Hamburgische Künstlerklub' (Hamburg Artist Club) together with a group of young painters. Inspired by the plein air painting of the French Impressionists he created numerous landscape scenes of the region around Hamburg that earned the artist the title 'Monet of the North'.
From 1903 onwards Eitner also became increasingly interested in the theme of the city. Ernst Wilhelm H Eitner attended the Hamburg School of Applied Arts and later studied at various academies in Karlsruhe, Düsseldorf, and Antwerp. He undertook study trips to Italy, Paris, and Norway, among other places. Eitner focused on painting motifs from Hamburg and its surroundings in an Impressionist style. He was a founding member of the Hamburg Artists' Club of 1897 and studied under Thomas Herbst and Arthur Illies in Hamburg's Alstertal district.
