Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1910, Esther Carp is from a family of musicians. She studied painting in Vienna and moved to Paris in 1925. She then discovered the Nissim de Camondo collection and admired the paintings of Alfred Sisley and Cézanne. In 1931, the dealer Léopold Zborowski organized an exhibition. Suffering from paranoia attacks, she interned for the first time in 1941 and spent the rest of the war in a psychiatric hospital. She has similar episodes until the end of her life.
