Biography
Eunice Napangardi (c.1950-2005) was a Luritja/Warlpiri painter from Yuendumu in the Central Desert of the Northern Territory. She spent much of her life living on traditional foods such as spinifex and learning ancestral Dreaming stories from her grandparents. As one of the pioneering women in the Western Desert art movement, she initially assisted male painters (most notably her partner, Kaapa Tjampitjinpa) before emerging as an artist herself in the late 80s.
Her signature theme was Yuparli (Bush Banana Dreaming), a deeply significant story in her culture. Eunice's paintings often depict bush banana plants in various stages of growth, with radiating vines emerging from rocky crevices near watercourses.
