    Ferdinand Schauss was born in 1832 in Berlin. He became a genre painter and studied at the Academy in Berlin with Carl Steffeck. In 1856 he was a student of Léon Cogniet at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He went on study trips to England, Holland, Belgium, Italy and Spain. From 1874 - 76 he was a Professor at the Grand Ducal - Saxon art school Weimar, and in 1876 returned to Berlin. There he participated in the Great Berlin Art exhibition and from 1869 - 1916, the exhibition in the Glass Palace in Munich.
