    François Rouan was born in Montpellier in 1943. After graduating from l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, he develops his famous woven canvas technique as early as 1966.

    Drawing inspiration from Matisse's cut-outs et his friendship with Balthus, whom he met during his stay at the Villa Médicis between 1971 - 1973, Rouan treads his own innovative and radically original path.

    His current work integrates new techniques such as photography and film. Today, François Rouan is unanimously recognized as a major artist of contemporary art.
