  • Biography

    A painter, decorator and art administrator, Frank Hill Smith served as the Director of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Although he lived primarily in Boston, he also spent many years in Europe where he studied with Leon Bonnat in Paris and exhibited at the Paris Salon. Countries besides France that he visited were Holland, Belgium and Italy.

    In the 1870s, his focus turned to decoration, and his decorative work is at the Windsor Hotel and the Opera House in Holyoke, Massachusetts. In 1876, he was a member of the Jury of Fine Arts at the Philadelphia Exposition.
