About Frans Krajcberg

  • Biography

Born in Poland in 1921, Krajcberg has spent a great part of his life in Brazil. At the beginning of World War II, Krajcberg fled Poland to Russia, where he began studies in engineering and arts at Leningrad University but soon abandoned them to join the Polish Army. He fought until the end of the war and then traveled to Germany to study at the Fine Arts Academy in Stuttgart.

Between 1958 and 1964, he lived between Paris, Ibiza and Rio de Janeiro, where he produced his first sculptures made from the trunks and roots of dead or incinerated trees from the rainforest.

He traveled extensively around the Amazon to obtain his materials and his work reflects a constant concern with the environment and its destruction.
