Frans Wouters was a Flemish Baroque painter who translated the monumental Baroque style of Peter Paul Rubens into cabinet paintings. He began as an apprentice to Pieter van Avont in Antwerp but later joined Rubens' workshop in 1634. Wouters became a master in the Guild of St. Luke in 1635 and served as court painter to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II in the 1630s. He was later sent as an ambassador to England in 1637 and became the painter to the Prince of Wales in 1638.
