About Frans de Momper

  • Biography

Frans de Momper, the nephew of Joos de Momper II, worked in Antwerp until 1646 when he moved to the Northern Netherlands after his first wife's death. In Antwerp, his style was influenced by his uncle, while in the Netherlands, he was more influenced by Jan van Goyen's landscape style. His large and colorful landscapes, such as village fairs with vast backgrounds, are typical of Flemish landscape painting. Signed paintings by Frans de Momper are rare, with only a few known examples, including a comparable large landscape in the collection of the KMSKB (inv. 6046).
