About Franz Kruger

  • Biography

From 1812 to 1813, Franz Krüger (1797-1857) studied at the Academy of Arts in Berlin and trained himself as a draftsman while drawing from nature. He created many drawings in Prussian royal stables. In 1818, he exhibited at the Academy for the first time.

He received commissions for portraits by Prince August of Prussia and Count Neidhardt von Gneisenau and was soon in demand as a portraitist with other members of the royal family. He made numerous trips to the court of the Russian Tsar Court in St. Petersburg, as well as to the courts of Hannover and Schwerin. At the time of the March Revolution, he lived in Dessau; he then moved to Berlin and remained there until the end of his life. (cko)
