The pre-emminent sporting artist of his time, Woodhouse became best known for painting every Melbourne Cup winner for more than 30 years, from the first in 1861 ‘Archer’. He worked mainly in oils on a commission basis. He became a foundation member and councillor of the Victorian Academy of the Arts.
