    Friedrich Karl Gotsch (1900-1984) initially studied economics, philosophy and art history in Kiel, but at the same time took painting lessons with the expressionist painter Hans Ralfs. In 1920 Gotsch went to Dresden to study at the local Academy of Arts. In the beginning Otto Hettner was his teacher, 1921-1923 Gotsch was a master student under Oskar Kokoschka. After graduation, he stayed for longer time in New York and Paris and also traveled to Italy and southern France.

    During World War II Gotsch was drafted into military service as a translator. After the war, he worked primarily in cultural policy, until in 1951 he turned back to painting. Gotsch's early work is coined by t...
