    Friedrich Amerling (Vienna, 1803, Vienna, 1887) started his career illuminating maps and prints before attending the Akademie der bildenden Kunste (Vienna Academy of the Arts) from 1815 until 1824 under Hubert Maurer and others. From 1824 to 1826 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague where he was taught by Josef Bergler.

    In 1827 he traveled to London, where he was influenced by the portraitists Sir Thomas Lawrence and Joshua Reynolds. Further journeys led him to Paris, where he studied with Horace Vernet. Back in Vienna, Amerling was commissioned to paint the Emperor Francis I of Austria, (Kunsthistorisches Museum,Vienna.).
