    Gu Gan was born in Changsha, Hunan province, China, in 1942, and studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 1985, he organized the first exhibition of "Chinese Modern Calligraphy."

    He was famous for "Father of the Chinese Modern Calligraphy," and is a modern calligraphic artist who blends Chinese calligraphy with Western Art. The works created by Gu Gan are expressed by merging the abstract spirit and high spontaneity of traditional Chinese calligraphy in his artwork, with influence of 20th century Western masters.
