    Mayer-Marton's watercolor landscapes show a Chinese influence gained illustrating the best-selling Phaidon Press book Der Kreidekreis by Klabund in 1928. Before the Second World War he also worked a great deal in graphics and achieved considerable mastery of the medium. His oil landscapes have a distinctive, brooding quality. His later oils have cubist and futuristic elements, often with a musical theme.

    George Mayer-Marton was born in 1897 in Raab, (now Györ) Hungary and died in Liverpool in 1960. He studied art at the Academies of Vienna and Munich. By 1927, he was Secretary, and later became Vice-President of the progressive Viennese society of artists, the Hagenbund. During the interwar years...
