    George Cattermole was born at Dickleburgh, in Norfolk. When he was fourteen he began working as an architectural and topographical designer for the antiquary John Britton. He became an associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1822 and a full member in 1833. In 1850 he abandoned the society, dedicating his attention to painting in oil.

    At the Paris Exhibition of 1855 George Cattermole was honored with one of the five first-class gold medals awarded to British painters. He also received professional artistic honors in Amsterdam and in Belgium.
