    The English painter George Clarkson Stanfield studied at the Royal Academy of Arts and was also taught by his father, the landscape and marine painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield. His favorite subjects were picturesque views of lakes and rivers in Italy, Switzerland, France and Germany as well as British coasts.

    From 1844 on Stansfield exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the British Institution. His view of Limburg an der Lahn from 1862 has been selected 2010 for a postage stamp of Deutsche Post. (fea)
