    Born in Belfast, Ireland in 1916, George Gault had an early career in the military, serving in the Royal Artillery from 1934 to 1937 and then being recalled to service during WWII. In 1947, however, he turned to art, enrolling in the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts where he studied until 1951.

    One of his works is reproduced on the dust jacket of the history of the school (published by the Antique Collector's Club, 1995).

    His main influences as a student were William Coldstream and Victor Pasmore. In 1954, Gault won the Silver Medal at the Paris Salon, and three years later he was onWhyte's Auction
