    George William Gage (1887-1957) Original Book Illustration (1910-1920). A student of Howard Pyle, George William Gage painted covers for the Saturday Evening Post and other national magazines of the period.

    He was a prolific illustrator of books, and later taught the artistry of book illustrating at New York's School of Industrial Art. A powerful image was published as a book illustration bearing the caption, He Found Himself Part of the Caravan. Masterfully rendered in oil grisaille on canvas, it measures 30 x 20 and is signed lower left. This painting was reproduced in Samuels' Encyclopedia of Artists of The American West (Peggy & Harold Samuels), figure 102.
