Son of a typographer, he was the eldest of 10 children and as a boy was forced to work to help support his family. In 1885, the Brasseur's moved to Brussels where Georges, following his artistic inclinations at age 12, took evening drawing classes at the Academy of Molenbeek (suburb of Brussels). After taking two winter sessions, the Academy was closed due to a lack of subsidies. Due to economical circumstances of the family, his father refused to let him register at the Fine Arts Institute.
