He followed in the footsteps of painters who had come to Tunisia on a study trip and later settled there, such as Alexandre Roubtzoff and André Delacroix, who were major players in the artistic and intellectual life of 1930s Tunisia. Le Mare began his career surveying the archaeological ruins of Carthage, and completed his training with painting courses at the Académie Julian between 1900 and 1905. On his return to Tunis, he soon began exhibiting at local events such as the Salon des Artistes Tunisiens, of which he was a founding member. Le Mare was commissioned to decorate the dome of Tunis...
