    Gerald "Gerry" Patrick McCann was born in Queens, New York City on June 23, 1916.

    The McCann family moved to Brooklyn in 1918. McCann graduated from high school in 1934 and moved on to attend Pratt Institute of Brooklyn, studying under Monte Crews, Nick Riley, John Fleming Gould and H. Winfield. McCann switched areas of focuses between art and engineering.

    In 1939, for pulp magazines, McCann began drawing pen and ink story illustrations. His work appeared in Ace Sports, Thrilling Sports, Sports Story, Western Story and Wild West Weekly. ""
