    At the age of 16, Gérard de Palézieux left the school to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne, Switzerland under Casimir Raymond and Henri Bischoff. From 1939 onwards, he spent the first years of the war in Florence, Italy where he became familiar with the art of Renaissance, exploring the Tuscan landscape and gaining further knowledge in painting and graphic design in the Trovarelli painter's studio.

    During this time he made a distinctive acquaintance with the work of Giorgio Morandi, whom he was to visit later. Back in Switzerland, Palézieux settled in Veyras near Sierre in 1943.
