Gerhard Peter Franz Vilhelm Munthe had originally intended to become a figure painter, but the change to a greater focus on landscape painting happened gradually and was based on his own studies rather than direct influence from a single teacher. He had studied at home in Norway (1870-74) and in Düsseldorf (1874-76), where the flavors from growing up at Elverum form the basis for nature's consideration. In the winter of 1876-77 and until the fall of 1877, Gerhard Munthe painted 8 large and 3 small pictures for sale to finance his stay in Munich.
