    Gerhard Peter Franz Vilhelm Munthe had originally intended to become a figure painter, but the change to a greater focus on landscape painting happened gradually and was based on his own studies rather than direct influence from a single teacher. He had studied at home in Norway (1870-74) and in Düsseldorf (1874-76), where the flavors from growing up at Elverum form the basis for nature's consideration. In the winter of 1876-77 and until the fall of 1877, Gerhard Munthe painted 8 large and 3 small pictures for sale to finance his stay in Munich. These were sold to art associations and wealthy collectors among the elite of that time. The stay in Munich came to stretch over the years 1877-82. Many of Munthe's friends were already in town 1.
