He had studied at home in Norway (1870-74) and in Düsseldorf (1874-76), where the flavors from growing up at Elverum form the basis for nature's consideration. In the winter of 1876-77 and until the fall of 1877, Gerhard Munthe painted 8 large and 3 small pictures for sale to finance his stay in Munich.
