    Gerhard Janssen (actually Wilhelm Peter Gerhard Janssen), was a German painter, draftsman and graphic artist who was born in 1863 in Kalkar.

    Janssen studied, with breaks, from 1878 to 1894 at the Düsseldorf Academy under Eduard von Gebhardt, Hugo Crola, Heinrich Lauenstein, Julius Amatus Roeting, Adolf Schill and Peter Johann Theodor Janssen.
    He was self-taught in studies of Dutch painting, and undertook study trips to France, Belgium, England and the Netherlands. In 1909 Janssen was appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Academy.
