    As told by Vasari, Giovanni Francesco Caroto was a pupil of the painter Liberale da Verona. Caroto left his literary studies for painting, later becoming a direct disciple of Mantegna, who sent out his works by his hand. The influences of Mantegna on Caroto can be felt very well in the earliest works known to us, as can be seen in the Madonna who sews preserved in the Galleria Estense in Modena dated to 1501. Resumed with slight variations in the slightly later painting of the Venice Academy, the work presents influences of the Lotto and Previtali documenting the quick update of the author.
