Landscape painter, Glenn Dean was born in Torrance, California. In his 20s, he attended a junior college in San Diego for a few years and tried body-boarding as a career. He remembers seeing a "truly good painting for the first time; that's when I decided I wanted to become a painter."

He began to paint outdoors and took a couple of outdoor painting workshops. However, he was not satisfied with this and turned to learn from early California Impressionists. He studied the techniques of Edgar Payne, Maynard Dixon, and William Wendt.
