    Guillaume Romain Fouace (1837-1895)

    The artist Guillaume Romain Fouace was born to farmers on 22 May in the French village of Réville, hamlet of Jonville in 1837. He produced over 700 paintings and drawings of portraits, children, landscapes, genre scenes, nudes, animals, but is best known for his still-life painting in the Realist style.

    He had produced drawings since he was a child, and his talent was recognised by the museum curator in Cherbourg, who gained Fouace two municipal bursaries from Cherbourg to study art in Paris. There he studied under Adolphe Yvon (1817-1893) before setting up a studio as a portrait painter.
